What Is a 2FA Key and How Do You Use It?
Many accounts come with a 2FA key. Here is what it is, how to add it to an authenticator app and why it matters when you buy an account.
When you buy an account, the listing often says "with 2FA key". Here is what that means in plain words.
What it is
2FA means two-step login. After the password, the site asks for a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. The 2FA key is a long text code that creates those six-digit codes. With the key, you can get the codes yourself, without the original phone.
How to use it
- Install an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator or a similar app.
- Choose to add an account by entering a setup key.
- Paste the 2FA key from your order and give it any name you like.
- The app now shows a six-digit code. Use it when the site asks for one.
Why it matters when you buy
An account with a 2FA key is easier to log in to and to keep safe. Without it, the platform may ask for a code that goes to a phone you do not have, and you can get stuck.
After you log in
Change the password and the recovery email first. Then, if the platform lets you, set up 2FA with your own authenticator app, so the account is tied to you and nobody else.
Keep the key safe
Save the key somewhere safe. If you lose it and the app, you can lose access to the account.
